(C) Joachim Bergauer

I am a PhD candidate and researcher in human-computer interaction at the University of Salzburg, Department of Artificial Intelligence and Human Interfaces, advised by Alexander Meschtscherjakov and Manfred Tscheligi. I previously obtained an MSc in human-computer interaction and a BSc in computer science.

My research lies at the intersection of human-computer interaction and automated driving, focusing on passenger-facing in-vehicle intelligent agents in SAE Level 4 automated driving systems. It addresses complex challenges and emerging opportunities in advanced mobility by designing, implementing, and evaluating novel simulation environments to investigate future mobility scenarios. I study how automated vehicles communicate intent and enable cooperative interaction with passengers, particularly in safety-critical contexts, with the broader aim of supporting responsible societal and industrial growth. Using multi-driver simulation and over time studies, my work investigates how trust and reliance on automated vehicles develop over time, combining empirical methods with simulation-based approaches to evaluate their broader societal and systemic impact.

I contributed my expertise to the European Commission, was recognized in the Austrian Federal Ministry’s “35 under 35” initiative, and serve as a STEM (MINT) ambassador and LEA role model in Salzburg. Alongside my research, I actively engage in science communication and have been featured multiple times in national media discussing the future of mobility.

I welcome collaborations with academic and industry partners and am open to supervise Bachelor’s and Master’s students.

MINT (STEM) Outreach

I am actively involved in MINT/STEM education as a STEM ambassador since 2019 and a LEA (Let’s Empower Austria) role model since 2025 in Salzburg.
Through hands-on workshops, talks, and public events such as the Long Night of Research, MINTwoch, and European Researchers’ Night, I invite children and young people – especially students from grades 7 to 10 – to explore science and technology alongside real researchers.
These activities spark long-term interest in STEM, showcase diverse educational and career pathways, and aim to inspire the next generation of talent, with a special focus on empowering girls and young women in STEM.

– Information on various STEM projects can be found here: https://www.mint-salzburg.at/angebote/
– New MINT dates: https://www.mintlabs.at/termine/
– Following pictures show impressions of the latest MINTwoch, European Researchers’ Night, Kinderstadt Mini-Salzburg etc.

Personal

My life goes beyond research! When I’m not riding my Kawasaki Ninja, I’m constantly seeking new opportunities to learn and grow. Statistically, I am also very likely to be found at any automotive event in Austria – or anywhere else where engines make noise.
I’m fluent in German (native) and Turkish (native), with a strong command of English (C1), French (A2), and Croatian (A1).
